RESOLUTION OF SUPPORT FOR PRESERVATION OF UNDERWATER ARTIFACTS
WHEREAS underwater archaeological sites, including shipwrecks, shipwreck parts, submerged aircraft, buildings, structures, artifacts and human remains are non-renewable underwater cultural heritage representing physical evidence of past human activities and
WHEREAS systematic archaeological investigation of these sites opens a window to the past, allowing us to view life as our ancestors lived. Preserving our archaeological resources is vital to keeping this window open and
WHEREAS the study and enjoyment of archaeological resources for science, tourism, and education not only preserves sites, but benefits the economy over time. Alpena has long been a significant destination for divers as well as researchers that enjoy exploring a variety of relatively intact shipwrecks and
WHEREAS artifacts recovered from shipwreck sites are the collective heritage of all citizens and disbursement of collections is not in the public interest. Commercial exploitation of artifacts, including selling or trading, may result in a collection of artifacts being permanently scattered as well as subjecting the artifacts to deterioration and possible loss. Artifact sales also perpetuate the looting of shipwrecks; now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED that the Thunder Bay Underwater Preserve Committee encourages all citizens to help to preserve Alpena's maritime history by eliminating the purchase or sale of shipwreck artifacts and donating the objects to the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve.
