Situated on Lake Huron’s Thunder Bay, Alpena is a premier location for Great Lakes maritime heritage and recreation. The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary’s Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center is a popular destination which allows the public to experience and appreciate the shipwrecks in Thunder Bay. You can see shipwrecks up close on a snorkeling tour or step aboard one of the tall ships that routinely visit the community in the summer. Learn about the unique history of island lighthouses on a boat tour or spend the night on an island and experience the life of a keeper.
